To describe the use of protein supplementation in critically ill patients in Enteral Nutrition Therapy

Abstract:

Critical illness is associated with a state of catabolic stress where it is common to observe nutritional depletion since there is an increase in energy expenditure and protein catabolism¹². This it is necessary to ensure adequate nutritional intake, is unique by enteral formulations, or the modules increase. To describe the use of protein supplementation in critically ill patients in Enteral Nutrition Therapy. Cross-sectional descriptive study with a quantitative approach carried out between January and February 2016. The collection was in enteral nutrition department of University Hospital Onofre Lopes in Natal / RN, included data from protein supplementation requirements in critically ill patients fed via enteral. Data were tabulated using descriptive statistics in Microsoft Office Excel® 2010. Analyzed the nutritional requirements of 156 hospitalized critically ill patients. Of these, 10.8 % (17) had to be supplemented with protein modules. Averaging 11, 7 g of protein per patient, an average of 4.7 days. The prevalent reason for the suspension of supplementation was the presence of episodes of diarrhea 29.4 % (5), followed by discharge from the Intensive Care Unit, 23.5 % (4). Some patients even using enteral nutritional support received protein supplementation to meet their protein nutritional needs.
