In Brasil Visceral Leishmaniasis is caused by the protozoan Leishmania chagasi and the country presents almost the whole of South American cases.The main reservoir is domestic dogs and one form to control it is euthanasia thereof. However, this method has been show to be ineffective. To analyze epidemiological data on Visceral Leishmaniasis in the brazilian population and the possible health education actions to combat the vector and mode of transmission. Were found 125 articles, manuals attention to heath and epidemiological reports published in the years 2004 to 2016, that addressed clinical and epidemiological aspects of Visceral leishmaniasis, prevention and health education, 14 articles of which were used to write this review. Visceral Leshmaniasis is related to low socioecomomic conditions, destruction of the naturals habitats, as well as the adaptive capacity of the vector. The method of euthanasia is shown ineffective, because in this review show that more than 50 % of the infected dogs are asymptomatic and restituted in the street, contributing to maintaing and/or increasing the number of humans cases. It's necessary takes strong campaigns in health education, highlighting preventive strategies with the use os mosquito nets, repellents and resposible ownership os animals.
