Abstract:
Tinea versicolor is a fungal infection of the stratum corneum of the skin and presents with abnormal skin pigmentation. A fungus of the normal skin flora (Malassezia furfur) causes it. This is a very prevalent disease in many countries, especially in tropical and temperate climates. It is a disease that can be classified as neglected because of the little attention given and the high prevalence, with attention to developing countries. There are treatments available, but as the main involvement of this infection are spots, rarely causing other symptoms such as itching, there is great demand for infected individuals to seek treatment. Recurrence is common in this infection, which enhances the prevalence of tinea versicolor. In this study, we sought to highlight the presence of tinea versicolor in a group of children and adolescents in a community in the city of Recife. Clinical examination was used to characterize the spots and correlate with the characteristics of the Tinea. A high prevalence of the infection and distribution of characteristic spots according to age was observed. Because of the high prevalence and high rate of recurrence already known, there is a clear need for attention to this infection.
